Snyder Construction's bid of $11.75 million was the lowest of four submitted for project

MASON CITY - Dean Snyder Construction of Clear Lake has been awarded the contract to build Cerro Gordo County's jail.
The Cerro Gordo Board of Supervisors approved the contract Wednesday pending a legal review.
Snyder, one of four contractors to submit a proposal, had the low base bid of $11.75 million.
Henkel Construction of Mason City submitted a base bid of $11.8 million; Miron Construction of Cedar Rapids, $11.8 million; and Schroeder/Leverington Construction of Bloomington, Minn., $12.1 million.
"We're very pleased," said Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals, who has worked with a committee designing the jail. "It is really nice to have a local contractor win the bid."
Project administrator Dave Roederer, of Stratavizion of Des Moines said the low bid was under the $13.5 million approved for the project, leaving a $214,000 contingency fund to cover proposed additions.
He said alternate bid items in the construction package would not be recommended at this time.
A vehicle compound, epoxy floor covering, additional landscaping and use of concrete rather than asphalt to pave a parking lot will be considered as the project moves forward.
"Obviously, in the best-case scenario we'd like to include some or all of the alternate options, but we'll have to see," said Pals.
The law enforcement complex will include a 140-bed jail, sheriff's department offices, dispatch center, courtroom and space for emergency management.
Construction will be on 15 acres at the northwest corner of Lark Avenue and 263rd Street, part of the former Cerro Gordo County Farm, southwest of Mason City.
Construction is expected to start in the next two weeks and the contract states the project must be completed by the end of December 2007.
