Police investigate second arson case
MASON CITY - For the second time in less than a week, an intentionally set fire has burned inside a vacant Mason City house.
At 2:32 a.m. Wednesday, the Mason City Fire Department responded to a call at 641 S. Pennsylvania Ave.
A two-story house, owned by Saleem AbuJobarah of Clear Lake, was destroyed, according to Capt. Mark Christiansen of the Mason City Fire Department.
Later on Wednesday, investigators determined the fire was intentionally set.
On July 5, the Mason City Fire Department responded to a fire that did minor damage to an empty, two-story home at 410 Second St. S.W.
That blaze was reported at 5:30 a.m.
Authorities say there is evidence that an accelerant had been spread in the home. A back door at the home was forced open.
Police stopped short of saying the two cases are related, but confirmed that both cases remain open and under investigation.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting the police and fire departments with the investigations.
