When to use 911

Call 911 when there is a life or death emergency that requires the immediate response of emergency services such as police, fire or ambulance.

Always call 911 when there is a medical problem, traffic accident or something that requires the fire department to respond.

When there is a situation that requires police response but is not an emergency, use our non-emergency telephone numbers: (641)421-3000.

How to call 911

All 911 calls are received by our dispatch center by communication officers trained to screen calls quickly and efficiently.

  1. Dial 911 (no need to deposit money on pay phone)
  2. Tell the 911 center what you need; ambulance, fire or police
  3. Be calm. When the caller is excited, it is hard to understand and get vital information quickly.
  4. Stay on the phone. DO NOT hang up.
  5. Give your name and address. If your address is different than the location of the incident, be sure to let the operator know.
  6. If possible, give the operator a description of any suspect(s), weapons (if any), and vehicle description, including license.

Emergency operators will verify your address and telephone number to ensure they are accurate. People living in mobile home parks, condominiums, apartments or private roads should give specific directions to the location to ensure efficient and timely response.

It is a misdemeanor under Iowa code section 718.6 for any person to willfully use the 911 system for any purpose other than reporting an emergency. It is a felony if someone is injured or dies as a result of a emergency services response to a false call.
