MASON CITY - Site preparation for the Cerro Gordo County Law Enforcement Center began in mid-July.

Construction crews are grading and digging for footings. Utilities crews are extending lines to the site by boring water and sewer lines under Highway 122 to avoid closing that busy stretch of road, according to Sheriff Kevin Pals.

"Right now we're waiting for Alliant Energy to get power to the building site," he said. "There needs to be electricity before construction can get moving full steam."

Footings and some masonry work must be complete before pre-stressed concrete wall panels can be set.

The complex, slated to be complete by December 2007, includes a 140-bed jail, sheriff's department offices, dispatch center, courtroom and space for emergency management in a 15-acre site is at the northwest corner of Lark Avenue and 263rd Street, part of the former Cerro Gordo County Farm.
