MASON CITY - The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Department will purchase 30 new riot helmets with part of a $10,000 donation from the Cerro Gordo County Independent Insurance Agents.
Sheriff Kevin Pals said the helmets now used by deputies date to 1983. The covering inside the helmets has rotted, Pals said.
The riot helmets will cost about $3,600. No decision has been made on what to do with the rest of the money.
"We can never be too thankful," Pals said.
