MASON CITY - The Lime Creek Nature Center Foundation presented its "Friend of Lime Creek" award to the first-grade class of Newman Elementary School before the Foundation's March 6 meeting at the Lime Creek Nature Center.
The class was recognized for its exceptional performance in the Nature Center's "Garbage Busters" contest.
The program was created by Lime Creek Nature Center and the Landfill of North Iowa to encourage classrooms to reduce trash from field trip lunches.
The "Friend of Lime Creek" award was created to honor individuals, familes, and organizations for exceptional efforts in the area of conservation education and support of the Lime Creek Nature Center's mission, said Todd Von Ehwegen, Natural Resource Manager - Environmental Education for the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board.
He said the Newman first-grade teachers have enthusiastically embraced the Garbage Busters program with educational activities and classroom discussions, trash pick-up at their school, a school assembly program, and a presentation by Bill Rowland, director of the Landfill of North Iowa.
In nine years of the Garbage Busters program, Newman first grade has won the award five times, Von Ehwegen said. Their most recent award-winning classroom created just .14 ounces of trash per person on their field trip.
"The Garbage Busters program has allowed us to expand the educational experience of Lime Creek field trips, and has greatly reduced the amount of trash we receive," Von Ehwegen said. "We are very appreciative of Newman first grade's efforts and their support of our program."
