Because the use of herbicides in road ditches is costly and has
done little to control weed problems, a more integrated approach
has been implemented.
Native
warm and cool season prairie grasses that are well adapted to
local environmental conditions and are more adept at excluding
noxious weeds are planted in all regrade and cleaned ditch areas.
Timely burning is also used to invigorate native grass stands
in the roadside. Besides being an inexpensive biological control
to weeds, native grasses provide superior wildlife habitat, excellent
erosion control, are very long-lived, and provide a permanent
display of our tall-grass prairie heritage. If you have questions,
suggestions, or comments on roadside vegetation management, please
